How a Patronus works in the stories
The charm needs a single, powerful happy memory. That is why our questions ask about memories, safe places and what you protect rather than your favourite colour. In the books the shape reflects something deep in the caster: Harry's stag echoes his father, and Snape\'s doe echoes Lily.
Our seven animals each stand for a clear temperament: the stag protects, the wolf belongs, the owl watches, the fox improvises, the otter plays, the horse roams and the cat keeps its own counsel.
