What this IQ test measures
Intelligence tests try to measure reasoning, not knowledge. Our 30 questions mix five item types that show up, in some form, in most professional tests:
- Number series (numerical reasoning): spotting the rule behind a sequence.
- Letter series: the same skill, with the alphabet as the number line.
- Logic: syllogisms, ordering and "what must be true" problems.
- Verbal analogies: seeing the relationship between word pairs.
- Visual matrices: completing a 3×3 grid, the item type made famous by Raven's Progressive Matrices.
Honest limits
A 30-item online quiz cannot give you an official IQ. Proper tests take 60–90 minutes, are administered by a trained psychologist and compare you with a norm group matched for age. They also report a confidence interval, typically about ±5 points, even under ideal conditions. Our number is an entertaining estimate: great for comparing with friends, not for a job application or a diagnosis.
Scores also move with sleep, stress, practice and familiarity with puzzle types. If you retake this test straight away you will likely do better, because you remember the answers, not because you got smarter.
IQ score ranges
| IQ | Descriptive band | Share of people |
|---|---|---|
| 130+ | Very superior / gifted | ≈ 2.3% |
| 120–129 | Superior | ≈ 6.7% |
| 110–119 | High average | ≈ 16.1% |
| 90–109 | Average | ≈ 50% |
| 80–89 | Low average | ≈ 16.1% |
| 70–79 | Borderline | ≈ 6.7% |
| Below 70 | Extremely low | ≈ 2.3% |
Shares assume a normal distribution with mean 100 and SD 15. Band labels follow the older Wechsler convention; newer editions use slightly different wording.
Questions people ask
Is this a free IQ test with no sign-up?
Yes. All 30 questions, your score, your estimated IQ and the worked answers are free and shown immediately. There is no email gate and no paid certificate.
How accurate is an online IQ test?
Only roughly. Real IQ tests such as the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) or Stanford-Binet are administered one-to-one by a psychologist and scored against large, carefully sampled norm groups. This test uses similar item types but has not been normed, so treat your number as a fun estimate that could be 10+ points off either way.
What is a good IQ score?
IQ scales are built so the average is 100. About two-thirds of people score between 85 and 115, and about 2% score above 130, the usual threshold for "gifted" programmes and for Mensa membership (top 2%).
How is my estimated IQ calculated?
We convert your raw score (0–30) to a z-score using an assumed average of 17 correct and a standard deviation of 5 for adults taking this test, then place it on the standard IQ scale (mean 100, SD 15). The steps are shown on your result.
Why are there 30 questions?
Thirty is enough to mix five kinds of reasoning (number series, letter series, logic, verbal analogies and visual matrices) and still finish in about 20 minutes on a phone.
