Why your letters can flip: traits vs types

Most personality researchers see extraversion as a sliding scale, with most people bunched near the middle. A type test draws a hard line at 50% and gives everyone on one side the same letter. Drag the two people below and watch what happens at the line.

That is the main critique of type tests, and why test-retest studies often find a large share of people land on a different type within weeks. The fix is simple: read your percentages. A 52% Thinking person and an 88% Thinking person share a letter but not a personality.

Is this the official Myers-Briggs test?

No. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a trademarked assessment sold by The Myers-Briggs Company. This is a free, unofficial test that uses the same four preference pairs with original questions.

Is this the same as the 16 Personalities test?

Not quite. 16Personalities uses four-letter codes but adds a fifth "identity" dimension and bases its model partly on Big Five traits. This test sticks to the classic four pairs: E/I, S/N, T/F and J/P.

Which personality type is the rarest?

In surveys of US samples reported by the Myers-Briggs Company, INFJ and ENTJ usually come out among the rarest types, each at roughly 1–3% of people, while ISFJ and ESFJ are among the most common.

Why did I get a different type last time?

Probably because you sit near the middle on at least one pair. The slider explainer below shows why: a tiny shift in answers flips a letter even though you barely changed. Your percentages are more informative than the letters.
